Green-fingered tenants rewarded

Posted on Tuesday 4 September 2007

City of York Council's most green-fingered tenants were rewarded at the annual 'Tenants in Bloom' awards, which took place at The Guildhall last night (Monday).

Once again entrants left judges with a difficult task, having produced some stunning floral displays, innovative planting schemes and used the space available to them very creatively.

The big winner of the night was Jan Wylie, who scooped the individual prize in the east of the city and was named overall winner.

Jan Wylie said of her garden: “It’s a real sun trap so plants do well in it. It’s nice to be rewarded so I am surprised and very pleased to have won.’’

The other category winners were:
Communal garden for the east of the city: Gwyneth Wilson
Individual garden for the west of the city: Madelaine Brolly
Communal garden for the west of the city: David Papworth, Maurice Lyth and Steve Brown.

The second prize winners were Freda Rackley (east/central individual garden); Millicent Nicholson (east/central communal garden); and Michael and Janette Walker (west individual garden).

The third prize winners were Paul and Christine Smith, (east/central individual garden); Grace and Bob Dunwell (west individual garden); and George Westerman, Mary Makeham and Betty Turner Smith (east/central communal garden).

Housing operations manager, Tom Brittain, said: “We would like to thank everyone who has taken part this year. The standard of entries was very high. We will be running the competition again next year and I would urge people to take part.’’

The competition encourages tenants to maintain their homes and their environment. The winners of each category were awarded gardening vouchers totalling £200 and the overall winner received a further £100. Prizes of £100 and £50 were awarded to those who took second and third places in each category.
