Text messaging benefit reminders is just one new service being offered by City of York Council's benefits team to help young people.
Three members of the benefits team have now been specially trained as 'young people's reps' to help 16 to 25-year-olds successfully claim benefits.
The reps will track claims every step of the way and keep people informed of how things are going using the text messaging service.
"From talking to young people we know that claiming benefits can be a scary experience and so we decided to do something about this. We have looked at the whole process and tried to understand what young people want," stated Julie McMurray the Head of Revenues and Benefits at the City of York Council.
City of York Council worked with a group of volunteer youngsters and members of the York Nightstop Charity to put together the new service, targeted at 16 to 25-year-olds.
Julie McMurray said "We hope we have created a better service for young people, making it easier for them to access and navigate through. Our new reps will not only take all the hassle out of claiming but will provide support right the way through the benefit process."
Posters and pocket guides have also been produced to promote the new benefit service, giving information on how to access the young people's reps and benefits advice service.
As well as visiting the team at the benefit advice centre, young people can get information and advice over the phone by calling or texting the young people's rep on 0782 443 1500 or by e mailing benefits@york.gov.uk. Members of the benefits advice team can also visit people at home or arrange an appointment at the centre.
