Blooming marvellous!

Posted on Friday 14 September 2007

"Blooming Marvellous!". That's the phrase used by City of York Council's Neighbourhood Services chief to describe the work of those involved in the York in Bloom bid, which saw the city receive a Silver Gilt award.

And York's street cleaning and waste services supremo is so pleased with their efforts that he is planning to present the partners with a 'Caring For Your Environment Award' in recognition of their hard work.

The council has been working with partners across the city to get York ready for the judging. The city was assessed against other communities of over 100,000 across Yorkshire, being judged on the imaginative planting of trees, shrubs, flowers and landscaping as well as how it deals with issues of litter, graffiti, vandalism and anti-social behaviour.

The authority has worked closely with existing sponsors of floral displays, Askham Bryan College and businesses in the City Centre Partnership, to kick start the city's bid as well as involving the local community.

Terry Collins, the council's director of Neighbourhood Services, said: "We all wanted to enter the 'In Bloom' competition because it supports the work we are doing in York to create safer, cleaner and greener local environments for our residents, businesses and visitors to the city.

"I'm delighted with the way that everyone has pulled together to create a really good impression for both phases of the judging - in April and July - and wanted to do something to thank all those who were involved. Whatever the outcome of the competition, everyone can be justly proud of their efforts."
