York's former Lord Mayor, Janet Hopton, and her civic party, raised a staggering £50,000 for local good causes during their year in office.
A total sum of £50,136.78 will be split equally between the former councillor's two chosen charities - the Samaritans and Home Start York. Cheques to both charities will be handed over during a formal presentation taking place on Wednesday 12 September at Home Start York's headquarters on Cemetery Road.
The money was raised through a host of events organised and attended by last year's civic party - Janet and David Hopton, and Richard and Alison Baldwin. Events included the popular Valentine Ball at York Racecourse, a fashion show, several musical evenings and an enormous balloon release organised by CPP.
Janet Hopton, former Lord Mayor is delighted with the amount raised: "During the year we were overwhelmed by the support from both individuals and local businesses and organisations who contributed with their expertise, time and money to help us raise a wonderful contribution for our two chosen charities. I would like to take this opportunity to once again to thank everyone who supported these two very worthy causes during our year in office."
Richard Baldwin, former Sheriff of York, added: 'We would particularly like to thank York-based employer CPP, which gave up a considerable amount of time to help raise £15,000 towards the final total."
