Posted on Friday 7 September 2007

The Heworth Without Ward by election has been won by the Liberal Democrat candidate, Nigel John Ayre.

Mr Ayre won with 914 votes. The turn out was 1960, out of 3171 eligible voters - 61.8 per cent.

The other candidates received the following votes:

EVERETT Charles Dixon, Green Party - 58

KNIGHT, Michaela Susan, British National Party - 63

SINCLAIR, Adam Michael, The Conservative Party Candidate - 703

WELLS, Margaret, The Labour Party Candidate - 219

The win takes the number of Liberal Democrat councillors on the council to 20. The Labour group is the next largest group with 18 councillors. The Conservative group has seven councillors, and the Green group two.

The by election was called following the sudden death of the sitting Conservative Councillor, Bill Bennett, in July.
