York's 50+ games highlight the fabulous fifties (and overs)

Posted on Monday 3 September 2007

York will play host to its second ever sporting festival for those aged 50 and over this autumn, as part of the city's 50+ festival.

Organised by City of York Council's sport and active leisure team, in conjunction with public and private sports clubs across the city, the aim of the games is to show that age is no barrier to having an active lifestyle.

All the events will be held on Sunday 30 September and will include tennis, bowls, bouldering (on a climbing wall), table tennis, badminton and team petanque.

Ellie Hutchinson, the council's physical activity co-ordinator, said: "The 50+ games for older residents to take part in a wide range of different sporting activities. There are already large numbers of older residents leading very active lives in York and we know that this has both physical and mental benefits. As well as being great fun, taking part in a new activity is also a great way to get to know new people and learn a new skill. We're hoping to build on the success of the inaugural games last year by getting even more people involved."
