Teenage pregnancy campaign to feature at regional conference

Posted on Monday 29 October 2007

A ground-breaking multi-media campaign highlighting the difficulties of teenage pregnancy, which was created by pupils of Burnholme Community College, will be shown to health professionals at a regional conference.

Two short films were among the range of innovative materials created when a group of Year 9 pupils (who are now in year 10) worked with Inspired Youth, a not-for-profit organisation that works on media projects with young people.

Posters and two advertisements for distribution by mobile phone were also created, and will now be used as part of City of York Council's work to prevent teenage pregnancy.

The project, known as Arts Fusion, was funded by the council and saw a group of pupils from a range of different backgrounds devote one of their half-term holidays to learning new and exciting skills, such as photography and design. They worked with industry professionals and top artists and used the techniques that they picked up develop the educational film and posters.

Kevin Curran of Inspired Youth explained: "The young people researched a number of issues and chose to focus on teenage pregnancy. We worked with them to explore the issue and they were involved in every part of the process, from taking the photographs that were used in the posters to creating the actual design work.

"The project was about empowering the participants to create materials that make young people think about the huge responsibility of bringing a child into the world;  that would challenge their attitudes towards the issue and empower them to make good choices."

The council's teenage pregnancy and sexual health co-ordinator, Amanda Gaines, was so impressed with the film that she showed it to colleagues working in other areas and it will be screened at a regional teenage pregnancy conference on January 10, 2008.
