Read Write York is to play host to 'F Words', an evening of performances by Jack Mapanje, Simon Murray and Sevi Seviratne, at York Central Library on Monday 19 November.
The 'F Words' series of events has toured around Yorkshire, and was part of the programmes for the Ilkley and Beverley Literature Festivals. It's a programme of readings, events and workshops presented by the F-Words collective in response to the bicentenary of the abolition of slavery. The event in York will feature writer Jack Mapanje, a celebrated poet who lives locally. He left Malawi after being imprisoned for his writings, which were critical of the Malawian government of the 1980s.
Miles Salter, Read-Write York co-ordinator, said: "We are very pleased to be hosting this event to mark the bi-centenary of the abolition of slavery, and particularly to be welcoming a local writer, Jack Mapanje, to read at the library. The F-Words event is part of a strong literary programme, which includes a visit by Joanne Harris in February and the York Literature Festival in March."
The event will take place at 7.30pm and is free of charge, although a limited number of places are available. They can be booked by calling 01904 554316 or emailing tricia.raxworthy@york.gov.uk or alison.morgan@york.gov.uk
