Seven of City of York Council’s school crossing patrols will be receiving long service awards after clocking up more than 230 years service between them.
The city has over 25 school crossing patrol sites, staffed by the familiar patrol men and women in their florescent jackets and lollipop sticks, marshalling children across busy roads.
On Thursday 18 October Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Irene Waudby, will be presenting long service award badges to seven women in recognition of their service.
The seven crossing patrols are: Mrs. Sylvia Barker, Mrs. Joyce Donkin, Mrs. Christine Horn, Miss Lorraine Kelley, Miss Valerie Turbert, Mrs. Mary Rowson and Mrs. Jean Wheatley.
All have completed more than 30 years service and two - Mrs Horn and Mrs Wheatley have nearly completed 40 years of service.
After the presentation, the patrols will be given a guided tour of the Mansion House.
Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Irene Waudby, said: "This is a real achievement and we not only congratulate them for service, but also thank them for their unstinting dedication and loyalty to the job.
"We would also like to thank motorists and cyclists from throughout the city for respecting them and helping them in their job."
City of York council has existing vacancies for school crossing patrols, particularly in the Holgate area and Wigginton, and and anyone interested in finding out more about this role, should contact Fiona Kent on 07909 685095.
