Pupils at Clifton Green Primary School in York are some of the best walkers in the city - and it's official, with more than 90 per cent walking or cycling to school during Walk to School week this year.
The youngsters have won the Jack Archer Award for 2007 - an award which is presented to the school that has the highest percentage of pupils walking to school over a week.
Mr Archer, a former Lord Mayor of York, will present the award to Sheila Audsley, headteacher of Clifton Green Primary School school.
Around five and a half thousand pupils from 23 primary schools across the city took part in the week-long competition to see which school could get the most children walking to school as part of Walk to School Month in the UK.
Clifton Green Primary school, who recorded 90.5 percent of their pupils
walking to school during the week, also received a £200 cheque from
Age Concern to spend on sports equipment.
Jack Archer is President of Age Concern and has served the city for more
than 50 years as a councillor, Lord Mayor and Honorary Alderman. At the age
of 88, Jack is still an avid walker.
Walk to School 2007 is an international campaign to encourage more walking to school, and to help children engage with their local environment, rather than viewing the world from the detachment of the back seat of a car.
