Consultation launched for new York conservation area

Posted on Friday 5 October 2007

A proposal to create a new conservation area in York is being put out to public consultation today ( Friday 5 September) by City of York Council.

The proposed conservation area would be centred on one of the oldest sections of the Nestlé Rowntree factory and has been produced prior to the redevelopment of the southern part of the factory site which lies about 1.5km north of the city centre, between Haxby Road and Wigginton Road.

The public is being asked to give their views on the proposals and the suggested boundary for the conservation area. The proposed boundary would cover the buildings and landscape either side of Haxby Road, extending from the Yearsley Bridge up to and including the roundabout.

Conservation areas are special because of their history, buildings, open spaces and trees. These areas are controlled to ensure that the best parts are maintained and any new developments fit in with its surroundings.

Copies of the consultation document can be viewed online at www.york.gov.uk/planning. Or members of the public can view the document at City of York Council reception, 9 St Leonard's Place, New Earswick and Central Libraries, Joseph Rowntree Memorial Library and Haxby Road Post Office.

Comments should be forwarded to the council before Friday 16 November 2007 so that these can be considered before final approval is given by the Council's planning committee. They should be addressed toJanine Riley (Conservation Architect) on 01904 551305 or Lucy Nalton (Community Planner) on 01904 551694
