Checking the availability of counterfeit goods

Posted on Wednesday 31 October 2007

Members of City of York Council's Licensing and Regulatory Committee will be asked to approve plans to continue routine enforcement activity of counterfeit goods at York Market rather than mounting a dedicated campaign, next month.

The proposal follows an investigation into the availability of counterfeit goods on sale at York Market in Newgate.

Tackling the sale of counterfeit goods is one of the five priorities that the government ahs set councils' regulatory services.

City of York Council's trading standards officers have received 43 complaints about the sale of fake goods in the city since April 2006.  During this time, only one complaint has been made about the sale of fake goods at York Market.

Trading standards officers were asked to visit the market every day for one week during August to buy any items that they considered may have been counterfeit. Six items were bought from five different stalls of the course of the week, however only one item is the subject of further investigations.

Given the small number of complaints about counterfeit goods at the market, and the results of the test purchasing, officers are recommending that enforcement activity is carried out as part of the normal service, reacting to information and intelligence.

Members will be asked to approve the proposals at a meeting on Friday 2 November.
