Photo opportunity: New federation to hold first meeting

Posted on Wednesday 24 October 2007

The newly formed York Residents' Federation will hold its first general meeting since it refreshed its constitution and broadened its membership earlier this year.

Residents living within the City of York Council area and members of residents and community associations within the city are all eligible to join.

The aims of the federation include:
· Representing the interests of residents of City of York Council;
· Meeting, liaising and consulting with City of York Council, promoting and exercising the rights of residents to be involved in developing policies on housing and other issues and be a sounding board for service improvements across all departments;
· Providing assistance and support to associations who are members of the Federation and to encourage the establishment of new associations;
· Encouraging initiatives relating to the prevention of crime, vandalism and anti social behaviour within the community;

The federation is also keen to hear from groups and organisations who would like an opportunity to display information about projects which contribute to the theme of the event –‘Making Your Voice Heard’.
Pat Holmes, chair of the federation, said: "We are planning an event which is welcoming, and with some thought-provoking guest speakers workshops and displays. There will be a chance to meet up with other similar interests or concerns, and some entertainment.

"We are particularly keen to inject an element of fun into the show that the federation, and residents' associations aren't just about meeting to discuss problems but that we can be a real hub of social activity."

The meeting will be held at the Priory Street Centre, Micklegate, on Thursday 25 October starting at 2pm.

One of the aims of the federation is to encourage initiatives relating to the prevention of crime, vandalism and antisocial behaviour.

The federation has teamed up with the Neighbourhood Management Unit to offer a range of property and personal safety equipment.

As part of the Feeling and Being Safe in York campaign, the following will be offered free of charge at the event on 25 October on a first come first served basis:
- personal alarms
- property marking kits
- energy efficient light bulbs.

The new look federation meets on the third Thursday of every month at 7pm at the Guildhall.
