Rufforth School Safety Zone

Posted on Tuesday 23 October 2007

A report setting out ways to improve road safety in the vicinity of Rufforth School will be considered by City of York Council's Executive Member and Advisory Panel (EMAP) for City Strategy at a meeting on 29 October.

The report seeks EMAP approval for two temporary chicanes on the B1224 Wetherby Road to be made permanent because they act as traffic calming measures by slowing vehicles down as they approach the school.

It suggests that the existing 30mph zone on Wetherby Road to the north of the village should be extended and that a five-bar gate entry feature should be installed. Improvements to road signs are proposed in the area surrounding the School Safety Zone, and it is recommended that bollards and chevron boards be added to the chicanes.

It was initially envisaged that the scheme would include a vehicle activated sign (which flashes at drivers who have not slowed down sufficiently) on the approach to the chicane at the northern end of the village. However the report gives the EMAP an overview of feedback received from local residents, and from Rufforth and Knapton Parish Council and the police, which have led to the revised proposals (without the vehicle activated sign but with timber bollards around the chicanes) being drawn up.

However, it is also recommended that the possibilty of installing a vehicle activated sign at the north western entry point to the village, and five-bar gate entry features on the two other approaches to the 30mph speed limit zone should be considered by officers if traffic speeds are not brought down to an acceptable level.
