City of York Council's City Strategy Advisory Panel will consider a package of transport improvements to the A19 Fulford Road corridor at its meeting next week (Monday 29 October), with a view to consulting residents about the proposals.
A report being presented at the meeting outlines the results of a study of the road, covering the length from Skeldergate Bridge and Tower Street in the north, to the Designer Outlet in the south, together with the associated feeder roads.
It notes that the road is already congested at peak periods and, without any intervention, this situation will worsen in the future.
A proposed package of improvements has been identified which will benefit bus transport, cycling and walking, whilst keeping on street parking for residents and businesses. These include:
· Widening Naburn Lane and the A19 north of Naburn Lane to
provide a continuous bus lane
· Providing new traffic signals at the A19 and Naburn Lane
junction
· Additional bus lanes along sections of Fulford Road both
inbound and outbound
· Improvements to the A19/A64 roundabout
· Putting up signals on the Cemetery Road junction
· Improved facilities for pedestrians
· Improved facilities for cyclists with both on and off road
facilities
The package of improvements - including bus lanes, queue relocation, changes to signals and improved crossing facilities - have been tested and the results are outlined in the report.
It is proposed that, if members approve the report, a public consultation exercise is carried out to obtain the views of residents, businesses and stakeholders to identify the issues and options that need to be considered in preparing a full proposal.
