Local residents will be able to meet their local councillors, street environment officers and neighbourhood policing team this week as part of national ‘Not in my Neighbourhood Week (15-21 October).
The week-long event aims to raise awareness in local communities of the work which goes on in their area to tackle crime and make communities safer, whilst highlighting the contribution local communities can make themselves by saying no local crime and influencing how crime is tackled in their local area.
Residents in York can work with agencies across the city to tackle crime affecting local areas, whether its anti-social behaviour, environmental crime such as litter or fly tipping, alcohol or drug misuse. The aim is to make their neighbourhood and environment a better place to live through their local ward committee meetings.
The meeting are held on a regular basis and enable residents to meet key partners within tehir neighbourhoods, as well as raise any issues and concerns they may have.
Details of the ward committee meetings and the events/issues concerning York neighbourhoods are published in the Your Ward newsletter, which goes to all residents. Details can also be found on the council’s website www.york.gov.uk or by contacting the Neighbourhood Management unit, which co-ordinates ward meetings 01904 551832.
Meetings which are still be held this round are Derwent ward, Heworth Without and Osbaldwick ward on 29 October, and Wheldrake ward and Bishopthorpe ward on 6 November.
Liz Levett, acting head of Neighbourhood Management, said: "I would encourage all residents who have any concerns about their neighbourhood to come to the ward meetings as they are the ideal place to be able to raise these concerns directly with those who may be able to tackle them and also add their views on how to shape the future of their area. Last year over 2700 residents attended the ward committees and we value their input to help make York a better place to live, work and visit."
