Work has started on installing new land drains at City of York Council's Green Lane allotment site in Acomb.
Winter flooding due to collapsed land drains had become a regular occurrence on plots in recent years and tenants suffered the misery of seeing their crops rotting in the ground. The extraordinary summer rainfall this year meant repeat flooding for many tenants.
The £20,000 scheme will mean that plots can be re-opened on a waterlogged area of the site that has been out of use for many years, allowing people on the allotment waiting list to start gardening.
The project is expected to be completed by early in November.
