City's network management accolade

Posted on Wednesday 17 October 2007

City of York Council's transport chiefs are celebrating after their work to manage the city's road network has been deemed 'excellent' by the Department for Transport (DfT).

The DfT carried out a review of 81 Local Transport Plans created by local authorities across the country and York was one of only 20 that was given an excellent assessment - and the only authority in the Yorkshire and Humber Region to receive the accolade.

Transport Minister Rosie Winterton congratulated the successful local authorities for developing plans to beat traffic jams and keep roads flowing.

The Traffic Management Act (TMA) 2004 incorporates a Network Management Duty which imposes a responsibility on local traffic authorities to deliver efficient movement of traffic on their road network.

Damon Copperthwaite, assistant director for City Development and Transport, said: "It is pleasing to receive acknowledgement for the effort that we have put into managing the traffic but of course there is a still much do in a busy city like York."
