Tobacco sales reminder

Posted on Monday 1 October 2007

City of York Council's Trading Standards team is reminding tobacco sellers about the new legislation regarding the sale of tobacco products.

From today (Monday, 1 October), it will be illegal for any one to sell tobacco to a person under the age of 18 and anyone doing so could face a fine of up to £2,5000. The move brings the law on the sale of tobacco in line with other potentially harmful products such as alcohol and fireworks.

In addition, shops must also display a sign clearly advising customers of the new legislation.

Members of the council's Trading Standards team will be visiting shops to check that they are complying with the new law.

Matt Boxall, the council's principal Trading Standards office, said: "The aim of the new law is to make it easier for retailers to spot those who are too young to smoke.

"Our advice to shop keepers would be to apply the same principles they use when selling alcohol - asking for a proof of age of anyone who they think is under 21.

"Young adults can expect to receive more challenges about their age in the future, so it may be best for them to carry a proof of age with them to avoid disappointment."

Information for businesses and a downloadable copy of the warning sign are available on www.tobaccochange.co.uk. For more information, please contact the council's Trading Standards team on 01904 551569.
