At a meeting on 6 December City of York Council's Executive Member and Advisory Panel (EMAP) for Neighbourhood Services will consider expanding a scheme that has seen five Cold Calling Controlled Zones introduced across the city.
Cold Calling Control Zones were introduced in the Southdown Road area of Huntington; the West Bank area of Acomb; the Beckfield Lane area; the Heath Moor drive area of Fulford; and the Greenside area of Dunnington in October of this year.
The aim is to prevent doorstep crime, such as distraction burglary and crimes associated with cold calling, as well as reducing the fear of crime associated with criminals targeting people's homes. Residents within a designated zone agree that they do not wish to deal with cold callers. This means that anyone breaching this can be reported to the council's trading standards team or the police.
Since the scheme was launched the council has received requests from residents, the police and other interested parties for additional zones to be set up.
A report to the EMAP suggests that further zones should be created in a phased an prioritised way, and that the impact of existing zones should be assessed by measuring doorstep crime and residents' concerns about doorstep crime.
