Executive to consider recommendations of Future York Group

Posted on Monday 26 November 2007

City of York Council's Executive is to be asked to approve a report that sets out a series of recommendations aimed at boosting York's economy.

It will be considered at a meeting on 4 December and has been produced in response to a report released earlier this year by the Future York Group. It proposes that a commitment should be made to revising York's Sustainable Community Strategy, a document that will play a key role in shaping York in the future, by April 2008.

It also reveals that the council has written to Minister for Yorkshire, Caroline Flint MP, to seek government support for recommendations arising from the Future York Group's report.

In addition to this, the report identifies a need for the Economic Development Partnership Board to review its terms of reference and membership. This will be discussed at the board's next meeting. It also recommends that the council should continue to work closely with Yorkshire Forward and other partners to develop strategic thinking to connect the different elements of the York North West development site.

In response to the Future York Group's recommendation that the council and its partners should aim to double the city's economy by 2026, the report proposes that key priorities for the well-being of the city are identified and incorporated into the Sustainable Community Strategy, the council's own strategic objectives and the Local Development Framework Core Strategy.

The council's role in forming the city's new tourism partnership and the development of the York North West site are seen as key to enabling the council and its partners to further boost the city's economy in the future. Meanwhile the expansion of the University of York is considered a major boost to the city's status as Science City York.

The report also highlights the council's efforts to forge closer links with major employers in the city, with a view to creating appropriate conditions for their continuing success and future growth. Discussions with the Learning and Skills Council are seen as key to ensuring that labour supply meets demand. A proposal to tackle adult unemployment has been developed and is  being led by Future Prospects.

Although the report concludes that considerable progress is being made towards implementing the recommendations made by the Future York Group, the Executive will receive an accompanying framework document that will be used to ensure that progress continues.
