New disabled sports session at Oaklands

Posted on Monday 26 November 2007

A taster session to enable people with disabilities to try a variety of sports is being held at Oaklands Sports Centre from 2pm until 5pm on Wednesday 5 December.

All ages and abilities will be welcome and no previous experience in the sports is necessary.  The afternoon is all about trying different activities, having fun and getting fit at the same time.

A number of different sports will be on offer including boccia, new age kurling, badminton, table tennis, skittles, football, cricket and polybat. There is no need to book in advance and people can turn up on the day, although further information is available at www.york.gov.uk/oaklands or by calling 01904 552424.  The price will be just £1 for the afternoon, with carers and support workers going free.

If there is enough interest at this taster session then this event will become a regular weekly addition after Christmas and will compliment the other disability sports sessions already taking place at Oaklands.

Paul Ramskill, community leisure officer at City of York Council said: "We're really hoping that lots of people will come along to make this event a success. The activities will help to develop all sorts of skills including teamwork, co-ordination and communication but above all the afternoon will be a fun and sociable session.  If you would like to come but can't make this taster afternoon then please call us anyway to register your interest and we'll be in touch in the new year."
