Children plant bulbs to celebrate Big Wild Read

Posted on Friday 23 November 2007

Two thousand daffodil bulbs - one for every child who took part - are being donated by City of York Council libraries to celebrate the success of the Big Wild Read summer reading challenge this year.

Children who joined the council scheme over the summer will be celebrating their achievements by planting the bulbs around the city's bar walls on Monday (26 November).

School children, aged from five to 11-years-old, will be at the inner walls, Low Priory Street, to celebrate taking part in the reading challenge. The 12 Scarcroft School pupils were chosen to represent a range of age groups who completed the summer challenge and received their Summer Reading Challenge medals. They will be joined by Francis Postlethwaite, City of York Council's schools' liaison and children's librarian, alongside parents and teachers.

A total of nearly 2,000 children took part in the Big Wild Read with 70 pupils from Scarcroft School taking part -most of them read six books to complete the challenge.

The Big Wild Read was a call to action for children to make a positive difference to the environment, as well as a challenge to read six books of their choice over the summer holidays.

Alison Jones, City of York Council libraries team, said: "We pledged to donate the daffodil bulbs for all the children who took part and this will also contribute to York in Bloom. We are delighted that so many children have been encouraged to read more this summer, following the challenge.

"We know from talking to children that the challenge has helped them to love reading - one child told us:
"It was really fun and I normally don't read as many as I did in the Big Wild Read"
