City of York Council's Recycling team is encouraging residents to recycle even more waste, with a special offer for a kitchen waste recycling bin.
The council is offering 50 people the opportunituy to buy a special 'Bokashi' bin at a cost of only £20 - £30 less than the normal retail value.
The bin uses a mixture of friendly bacteria and molassas to safely compost kitchen food scraps including meat, fish, fruit and vegetable waste.
This method of composting food waste takes slightly more effort than home composting, but can be easily used in conjunction with a home compost bin system and will dramatically reduce the amount of food waste that goes into the bin and sent to landfill.
The offer will operate on a first come first served basis. It's recommended that before using Bokashi Bins, residents are already able to home compost successfully.
Anyone who would like more information about the Bokashi bins or who would like to take advantage of the offer should contact erin.gardner@york.gov.uk or call 01904 551551.
