Free tour of York's historic treasures

Posted on Thursday 1 November 2007

York residents get the chance this weekend to have a free tour of one of York's best kept secrets - The Lord Mayor's Mansion House.

The free tour is being offered this Saturday (3 November) on a first come, first served basis. Tours begin at 11am and 2pm and last for about one hour.

Visitors should bring proof of residency to take part. Full wheelchair access is available.

The Mansion House is one of York’s great historic treasures, and one of its best-kept secrets. It is an architectural masterpiece, with a fascinating story and an impressive collection of civic silver, paintings and furniture.

Visitors will get the chance to see a sword that once belonged to the Holy Roman Emperor, hear about what former Lords Mayors would eat and drink, discover the secret drawers in a bureau and even see where the Lord Mayors kept the chamber pot.
