City of York Council appoints its new Executive

City of York Council elected its new Executive at the council's Annual General Meeting today (Thursday, 24 May, 2007).

The Executive of nine Liberal Democrat councillors will lead the council’s decision making process over the next year. Nine Labour councillors will form a Shadow Executive.

The process follows yesterday's announcement (23 May) about the future leadership arrangements for the council.

Councillor Steve Galloway was elected as leader of the council, incorporating Economic Development and Community Safety. Councillor David Scott will be the leader of the Shadow Executive.

Councillor Ceredig Jamieson-Ball will be the Executive member for Corporate Services. Councillor Janet Looker will be the Shadow portfolio holder.

Councillor Ann Reid will be the Executive member for City Strategy. Councillor Tracey Simpson Laing will be the Shadow portfolio holder.

Councillor Carol Runciman will be the Executive member for Children's Services, with Councillor Dave Merrett as the Shadow portfolio holder.

Councillor Sue Sunderland will be the Executive member for Housing Services. Councillor David Horton will be the Shadow portfolio holder.

Councillor Christian Vassie will be the Executive member for Leisure and Culture with Councillor Ken King as the Shadow portfolio holder.

Councillor Sue Galloway will be the Executive member for Adult Social Services, and Councillor Sandy Fraser will be the Shadow member.

Councillor Andrew Waller will be the Executive member for Neighbourhood Services. Councillor Ruth Potter will be the Shadow portfolio holder and deputy Leader of the Shadow Executive.

Councillor Keith Aspden will be the Executive member for Youth and Social Inclusion, with Councillor Julie Gunnell as the Shadow portfolio holder.

The first meeting of the newly appointed Executive will be held on Tuesday 12 June, with the Shadow Executive meeting on Wednesday 6 June.

Councillor Irene Waudby has been appointed as the Lord Mayor of York.
