Walk to School Week - Keep Smart, Keep Fit!

Posted on Thursday 17 May 2007

Pupils from over 40 York primary schools will be walking their way to fitness this week, when record numbers of children take part in Walk To School Week (21-25 May).

Organised by the national Walk to School Campaign, the annual initiative aims to challenge parents, pupils and teachers to think about their journey to and from school, and the many benefits of making it on foot.

Pupils at Park Grove Primary School will have an extra incentive to join in the Walk to School Week activities as once their arrive at school they will be met by a member of York City's Football in the Community Team. They will chat to the youngsters about the importance of regular exercise and keeping fit, before treating them to a football demonstration. Every child who walks to Park Grove Primary School as part of Walk to School Week will get the chance to win a signed football and team shirt.

Alison Morgan, City of York Council's school travel advisor, said: "The Department of Health recommends that children do an hour of exercise every day. Walking or cycling to school is an easy and enjoyable way to contribute to this, as well as being much more sociable than sitting in the car."

Andrew Calverley, Park Grove Primary School headteacher, said: "When children walk or cycle to school they arrive full of energy and ready for the day ahead. This is what they need - and what we need too!"

Pete Vasey, from York City in the Community, said: "In order to take part in sport requires exercise and a certain level of fitness. Walking or cycling to school every day is a method of exercise which will help towards maintaining a healthy lifestyle and keeping fit."
