Double 'Caring for the environment' award presentation

Posted on Friday 16 March 2007

City of York Council has named the latest recipients of its 'Caring for the environment' awards, which recognise the achievements of those who have made a real difference to their local environment.

A double award ceremony will take place in The Groves on Wednesday 21 March to highlight the achivements of  two prominent local residents, one of whom will receive a posthumous award.

One of the recipients is Peter Burbidge, who lives in the Groves and is committed to making the best of the local environment for other residents. Peter is extremely dedicated and hard working on behalf of local residents, and works closely with the local street environment officer, John Wood, to ensure that the area is clean and well kept.

His achievements include successfully campaigning for alley-gating in the area to help keep the area free of problems associated with anti-social behaviour and fly-tipping.

Terry Collins, the council's director of Neighbourhood Services, said: "Peter has a real sense of civic pride and believes that everyone is responsible for making their own area better."

The second presentation will be of a posthumous award to the late Judy Bettley, who worked tirelessly for more than twenty years in The Groves and was an active member of the Residents' Association throughout that period. The award recognises Judy's contribution to her community, as well as her belief in the importance of local residents being actively involved in improving their local environment. It will be received by Claire Brooks, who is Mrs Bettley's niece. A bench dedicated to Mrs Bettley  will also be unveiled.

Terry Collins said: "Judy Bettley improved life for so many people over a long period of time and it is only fitting that we recognise her achievements with this award, as well creating a lasting tribute to her in the form of a dedicated bench."
