A new Alcohol Exclusion Zone covering the parish of Copmanthorpe comes into force today (28 March).
The zone was introduced by City of York Council, working in partnership with the police, in a bid to tackle alcohol-related anti-social behaviour following feedback from members of the public who had experienced or witnessed alcohol-related nuisance, annoyance or disorder in the areas.
Signs have been erected at the entrance to the village an in key hot spot areas to warn people of the ban. Anyone failing to comply with the requirements of the zone - not to consume alcohol in a public place or not surrendering alcohol or alcohol container on request - is liable for a fine of up to £500.
John Lacy, the council's Licensing manager, said: "There was overwhelming support from residents for the exclusion zone, especially those living in the Low Green whose lives had been blighted by drink related anti social behaviour. The creation of the zone is a good example of the council, police and residents working together to combat anti social behaviour."
