It's all in name!

Young people in York are being asked to come up with a name for a major new initiative this month.

City of York Council is launching a project to challenge children and young people to show the positive impact they can have on their local communities. Anyone aged between ten and 19 years of age is being asked to get into groups of between two and five people and carry out a project that makes their area better - anything from tidying a local play area, fundraising for a worthwhile case or helping elderly neighbours with their shopping. All the groups must be supervised by an adult and there are prizes for those schemes judges to be the best.

The council's play team is asking young people to come up with a name for the initiative as soon as possible. They will need to register their project ideas by the end of May.

Tim Waudby, from the council's Play team, said: "Young people have a huge amount to offer to their local community and we hope that this new scheme will help them do it in a very visible way. All the projects must be carried out during the summer holidays, so the groups will have six weeks to make an impact, and the best ones will win some fantastic prizes in recognition of their efforts."

Anyone wanting to submit a name for the project should write to Name that project!, Tim Waudby, Early Years and Extended Schools, Mill House, North Street, York, YO1 6JD. The winning entrant will receive £25 of high street vouchers of their choice.
