City of York Council has been awarded beacon status for its work in
improving
schools.
Beacon status is granted to those authorities who can demonstrate
clear
vision, excellent services and innovation within certain categories.
The 'School Improvement' theme requires councils to demonstrate clear
evidence
of rising standards of attainment and progress by pupils from all
backgrounds and abilities and show how they have provided clear direction
to schools and engaged with local communities and partners.
Awards are made based upon recommendations made by an independent advisory panel and panel members will be visiting the council in the autumn.
Patrick Scott, director of Learning, Culture and Children's Services at City of York Council, said: "We are absolutely delighted at this recognition of the quality of the education service provided in York. The award is to the council for school improvement, but tribute must be paid to all the schools in the authority area and the excellent work they do in raising standards of achievement."
