Benefit fraudsters beware

Posted on Wednesday 7 March 2007

City of York Council is appealing to residents to again help it to crackdown on fraud, following the success of its 2006 benefit fraud campaign.

Max Thomas, head of the council's fraud team, said:" We were delighted by the response from members of the public to last year's campaign. The number of people writing in with details of alleged benefit fraud almost tripled in the three months following the campaign and telephone calls increased by almost 50 per cent.

"Benefit fraud affects us all and it's estimated that it costs each family in York over £80 per year. The council has a good record of investigating and prosecuting benefit fraudsters and over the last two years has successfully prosecuted 57 people. However, our success relies on help from residents who supply us information about suspected fraud.

"Most convictions start with a tip off from a colleague, neighbour or relative and I would appeal to residents to help us track these people down so we can put an end to their actions."

The new campaign will include press advertising, and the display of posters in public and work locations across the city.

Anyone who has information about possible benefit fraud is asked to contact the council's fraud hotline on 01904 552935 or email benefit.fraud@york.gov.uk.

Anyone reporting a suspected fraud is asked to provide as much information as possible. All information received is treated in confidence and callers can remain anonymous.
