Win tickets for 'Blame'

Posted on Friday 2 March 2007

City of York Council and York Theatre Royal have joined forces to offer a lucky York resident a free pair of tickets to 'Blame', which will be performed on Wednesday 14 March.

The production will be followed by an after-show discussion with playwrights Beatrix Campbell and Judith Jones, which forms part of the programme for the council's first ever Literature Festival.

Set in a Hackney tower block, 'Blame' uses this social environment to explore the relationships of a dysfunctional and 'extended' family caught up in drug culture. Revolving around the disappearance of eight year old Laikeisha, the piece questions who is responsible for the welfare of this little girl. Each character has its problems and reasons for shifting responsibility, exposing the question of social conscience and ultimately 'who is to blame?'. The story is told in epic style, flitting back and forth in time to retrace and outline events surrounding the reasons for Laikeisha's disappearance. Exploring issues of individual and collective responsibility, 'Blame' is told in an upfront and immediate style.

Judith Jones has worked as a social worker and therapist for many years and has recently been invited to be an Honorary Fellow at the Child and Women Abuse Studies Unit at the University of North London.

Beatrix Campbell is a writer and broadcaster, and writer in residence at Northallerton Prison. Her writing regularly appears in the Guardian and The Independent and last year she wrote 'And All the Children Cried' with Judith Jones, which was performed at the West Yorkshire Playhouse.

Anyone who would like to be in with a chance of winning a free pair of tickets to see 'Blame' on Wednesday 14 March should send their name, address and telephone number to: Anne Mortimer, Read Write York, City of York Council, Mill House, North Street, York, YO1 6JD.

The closing date for entries is Friday, 9 March. All entries will go into a free prize draw and should be labelled 'Blame'.
