York Dance 2007 - Jus' Dance

Posted on Tuesday 19 June 2007

An exciting showcase of some of the best dance in York will bring this year's Dance York festival to a spectacular close.

Jus' Dance will take place on Saturday 30 June between 11am and 4pm in St Sampson’s Square. It is the seventh Jus’ Dance showcase and the variety of dance on display will be better than ever before. Nine groups will take part in the morning; there will be Break Dance with the Pocklington Boys Group at 11.40pm; Irish Dance from the Clover School of Dance at 11.50pm and Contemporary Dance from Red Shoes Dance at 12.20pm.

The fantastic African Dancers and Drummers from York’s Performing Arts Centre 2 will take to the stage at 1.15pm.  RJC Youth Dance, a community-based project from Leeds that offers new and life-challenging experiences to young people aged 16 plus,  will perform at 1.45pm. Exuberant Bollywood Dance, led by international choreographer Zoobin Surty, performs at 2.55pm and the afternoon ends with a break dance jam with the popular York Break Dance and Gravity Control.

Also taking part is Dance Fantasy, a group of GCSE dance students from Oaklands School. They choreographed their piece, ‘Doll Shop Horror’, in collaboration with their tutor, Alison Walker. The dance fuses contemporary, street and jazz dance together to create a performance inspired by the surrealist art movement.

This year, the event features guest star, Audible, who will be bring beatbox to Jus’ Dance.  Audible started as a DJ and has developed his beatboxing to such a level that he is able to unleash a whole manner of astounding vocal effects that will enthral the Jus’ Dance audience.

Edward Lynch, the council's dance consultant, said: "The showcase is a great way to end this year’s Dance York. It's a day full of energy, excitement and fun that demonstrates the fantastic wealth of  dance talent in the city. We are delighted to have Audible appearing for us. His performance is vocal percussion at its best."

Dance York 2007 boasts a diverse and exciting programme of dance events taking place in venues across the city between 19 and 30 June. Details of all the dance performances are available on the City of York’s festival website - www.yorkfestivals.com - or from council receptions and libraries.
