City of York Council is one of ten local authorities selected to work with ENCAMS later this year on a campaign aimed as ridding the streets of fast food-related rubbish.
Over the next 12 months ENCAMS, which runs the well-known 'Keep Britain Tidy' campaign, is concentrating its efforts on improving the quality of the environment and reducing anti-social behaviour by tackling fast food and cigarette-related litter.
Ten councils have been chosen to work with ENCAMS on a campaign starting in December that will crack down on people who drop fast food litter.
John Goodyear, the council's assistant director of neighbourhood services, said: "To be selected as a campaign partner, the council had to submit a bid to ENCAMS outlining how it has performed in this area of work so far and setting out what we want to achieve.
"We are delighted to be a partner and looking forward to working with ENCAMS later this year to raise awareness of this problem and make sure people dispose of their fast food litter properly."
