A new report by BDF Newlife, the UK's leading child health and research charity, has shown that City of York Council is a high spending authority for its size when it comes to providing equipment to disabled children.
The report entitled 'It's not too much to ask' shows that, in the last year, the council spent £57,296.00, which is more than some county councils that are more than three or four times its size.
In addition to providing equipment, the council spent a further £163,000 making adaptations to the homes of 21 families with children with disabilities. A further £93,000 was committed to helping seven more children and their families, and four applications that are still being progressed will cost the council in the region of £60,000.
Bill Hodson, director of housing and adult social services for the council, said: "This report demonstrates the high priority that we give to supporting families with disabled children. In fact, in 93 per cent of cases the required equipment has been delivered within seven days.
"This is in addition to the significant expenditure on making major adaptations to people's homes to accommodate disabled children. It is pleasing to see that the council's commitment in this area of work compares favourably with the amount of money spent by other much larger councils."
