Read Write York events for June

Posted on Monday 4 June 2007

Read Write York is promoting a busy programme for June, with events and activities to suit all tastes.

Highlights include the opportunity for local reading groups to get involved in a promotional event organised by Vintage by reading 'Grimm's Fairy Tales' and Angela Carter's 'Bloody Chamber' and then taking part in a feedback event. Any groups interested in getting involved should call Anne Mortimer on 01904 554316 or email anne.mortimer@york.gov.uk

In addition to this, all of the titles short listed for the Orange Broadband Prize are now available to local reading groups from City of York Council libraries.

Bronte fans will be excited to hear that Jane Thornton's adaptation of Wuthering Heights will be performed at York Theatre Royal between 2 and 23 June. Set against the wild, stormy North Yorkshire Moors in the early 1800s, this classic tale of lost love, passion and revenge is set to thrill theatregoers. An impressive cast includes Marshall Lancaster (DC Chris Skelton in the hit BBC One series Life on Mars); Joel Fry (soon to be seen in 10,000 BC); Jessica Harris (Fat Friends and Linda Green); Nick Figgis (The Creditors, Southwark Playhouse); and Kate Ambler, who makes a welcome return after appearing at York Theatre Royal last year in The Man With Two Gaffers. Tickets are priced between £9 and £18, and are available from the box office on 01904 623568.

On Thursday 13 June, Riding Lights presents Poetry Doubles, with David Harsent and Fiona Sampson, at 7.30pm at the Friargate Theatre. Tickets are priced at £6 or £4.50 for concessions, and can be obtained from the box office on 01904 613000.

On Thursday 21 June at 7.30pm, City Screen's Basement Bar is the venue  for a celebration of Harry Chambers' 30 years as publishing director of Peterloo Poets. Harry will share anecdotes and insights into the work of the press and give readings from his favourite Peterloo poems. He will be joined by prize-winning poet Valerie Laws.

Other events include a Dream Catcher writer's workshop at The Royal Oak Pub on Goodramgate at 6pm on Saturday 3 June; a Spoken Word poetry and prose open mic event at The Exhibition Hotel between 7.30pm and 9pm on Tuesday 5 June; and 'Vikings, Ghosts and Way-back-when' at Williams Bar on Goodramgate at 7pm on Thursday 7 June.
