Waste PFI project update

Posted on Thursday 21 June 2007

Next Tuesday (26 June) City of York Council's Executive will be asked to give the go-ahead for the formal procurement of residual waste management facilities to begin.

The council, working in partnership with North Yorkshire County Council, needs to source residual waste facilities to create a cost-effective and more environmentally-friendly alternative to disposing of rubbish in landfill sites. It is proposed that, subject to the outline business case receiving government approval, the procurement process will be in line with Private Finance Initiative (PFI) and bids will be evaluated on the basis of cost and quality.

Members will also be asked to agree that evaluation criteria should be developed and implemented, and that the director of City Strategy, Bill Woolley, will provide an update report on the search for suitable sites for waste treatment facilities at a future meeting. It is anticipated that such sites would be in the North Yorkshire County Council area and the county council is working to secure suitable locations.

If agreed by the Executive, these steps will progress the council's waste PFI project into the procurement phase.
