Watch your speed with SID

Posted on Monday 18 June 2007

City of York Council is teaming up with the police and fire services this week to carry out a week of heightened activity, encouraging motorists to watch their speed.

The council's road safety team is co-ordinating a week long campaign in a bid to reduce the numbers of people killed or seriously injured on York's roads.

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue will monitor key arterial routes into and out of the city between peak hours with a flashing sign - known as SID - that tells drivers to 'slow down' if they are exceeding the speed limit. North Yorkshire Police will be enforcing speed limits throughout the week.

Tom Foxton, from the council's road safety team, said: "Over the last three years, 30 people have been killed or seriously injured on Yorks' raods. It's estimated that 95 per cent of crashes are due to driver error and excessive speed is a major factor. We hope that the campaign will raise awareness of the potential consequences of excessive speed and encourage drivers to slow down."

The partnership team will target six key routes:
- Boroughbridge Road
- Shipton Road
- Malton Road
- Hull Road
- Fulford Road
- Tadcaster Road

The speed campaign is part of a wider City of York Council initiative to imrpove safety on the city's roads.
