York's 140km of dedicated cycle tracks will be highlighted next week with the launch of a new cycle route map for the city (18 June).
Published by City of York Council's cycling team, the map will include details of new sections of the cycle network; information about the council's cycle training programme; details about how to keep your bike secure; and information about Bike Rescue, York's new bike recycling initiative.
The map will be launched with the help of staff and students from York College, as part of the city's celebrations for national Bike Week (16-24 June). A free breakfast will be available to anyone who cycles from Millennium Bridge, Copmanthorpe or Bishopthorpe to the new college site.
Linda Capel, the council's sustainable travel project officer, said: "We hope that the new route map will prove an invaluable reference for cyclists across the city, whether they cycle everyday, or once a year. As well as providing details about York's cycle routes, it also contains information about training opportunities and bike security.
"It's great that we've been able to link up with the college to help students and staff celebrate national Bike Week and to encourage people to cycle to work or college."
Andy D'Agorne, organiser of the York College breakfast and careers co-ordinator at the college, said: "The ride is a great opportunity to encourage more staff and students to cycle to college, which is a key part of the college's Green Travel Plan. The new college is right next to the Sustrans Cycle Route 65 and will have first class facilities for cyclists."
The map is available free of charge from York's libraries, council receptions, leisure centres and Visitor Information Centres. Copies can also be downloaded from www.york.gov.uk/cycling
