Future York Group report launch

Posted on Tuesday 12 June 2007

Today, 12 June, City of York Council will formally receive a report outlining the findings of an independent strategic review of York's economy carried out by the Future York Group.

The report was commissioned by the council following a series of announcements about job losses in the city and this approach was strongly supported by the council's partners.

Led by Chairman Christopher Garnett, the Future York Group has liaised with a number of organisations and individuals committed to York and its economic future. Yorkshire Forward has also played a significant supporting role in the production of the group's report.

The findings of the report and recommendations made by Future York will be considered by the council's Executive at a meeting on 10 July, as well as the Economic Development Partnership Board on 19 June. It is anticipated that the council will work with partners to develop a series of action plans - covering jobs and the economy; skills and inclusion; infrastructure and challenges to change - in response to the Future York Group's recommendations.

Bill Woolley, the council's director of City Strategy, explained: "We recognise the importance of the economy in ensuring a high quality of life for residents and businesses. We will need to consider the recommendations in detail in order to develop action plans with clear, measurable targets.

"This is a landmark report and we're really grateful to the Future York Group for their hard work and commitment in producing this really comprehensive document. Clearly, we do need time to absorb the recommendations and look at how best we can move forward."

Copies of the report in full will be available on the council's website at www.york.gov.uk from today (12 June).
