York gives dog fouling the red card

Posted on Monday 4 June 2007

City of York Council's Neighbourhood Services team is thanking residents for their support for its campaign to rid the city of dog poo.

The team targeted dog fouling ‘hot spots’ and asked residents to let them know about problem areas in the city or dog owners who persistently allowed their dogs to foul in public places.

Liz Levett, the council's Street Environment manager, said: "We've been really pleased with residents' response to the campaign and we've received information about a number of key problem areas, which we will be patrolling regularly.

"As well as patrolling and speaking to dog owners about the campaign we arranged for any problem areas to be cleaned up and we want to ensure that they remain clear throughout the summer.

"Compared to many other places York is very clean in terms of dog fouling and most dog owners are responsible and clear up after their dogs, so it's just those few who aren't that we need to target."

The campaign is part of the council's York Neighbourhood Pride initiative, which focuses on issues that concern residents, such as the look of their local environment and feeling safe.
