Acting up for York youngsters in reading challenge

Posted on Monday 30 July 2007

Youngsters will be acting out favourite stories with the help of York journalist Miles Salter as part of a national summer reading challenge.

Tang Hall library will see youngsters from eight to 11 years old taking part in the event on Wednesday 8 August. The session is part of the Big Wild Read, a national initiative which is inspiring young people to get back to nature and read their way through the summer holidays.

Local journalist, poet and creative writing tutor Miles will be encouraging children to act out stories and enjoy exploring new books.

City of York Council library staff will be helping children through the challenge of reading six or more library books during the summer holidays. They will receive a special Big Wild Read folder with various goodies to collect during the holidays, including special scratch and sniff stickers with a range of smells.

The Big Wild Read is also encouraging children to make a positive difference to the environment. A daffodil bulb will be planted on the bar walls for every child starting on the challenge.
