Young people from the Westfield area have been working with City of York Council's Neighbourhood Services team to make their own contribution to the city's Yorkshire In Bloom entry.
Using flowers and tubs provided by Aldby Field Nurseries and the council, and working with the support of local youth workers, they have created attractive floral displays and donated them to Oaklands Sports Centre and local businesses.
Youth worker Vicky Fuggles explained: "The young people involved in this project were fed up with being seen as 'yobs' and wanted to do something positive for their community. The end results are fantastic."
Taz Barnes (13) said: "I think it is a good idea to try something new, like gardening, that I wouldn’t normally do and help the community at the same time.”
“I hope our effort will help York to win the competition,” added Grant Ledger (15).
