City of York Council is reminding residents that the enclosed bus shelter on Rougier Street is a smoke free area following the introduction of new government legislation on 1 July.
A number of complaints have been received about people who have flouted the ban by continuing to smoke in the bus shelter. The council is therefore taking a series of steps to raise awareness of the ban, including placing move obvious signs in the bus shelter and having it thoroughly cleaned to remove all traces of smoking-related litter.
In addition to this, the council's smoking enforcement team will be carrying out spot-checks in the shelter and warning anyone caught smoking there that they could receive a fixed penalty notice in the future.
