Yearsley refurbishment reminder

Posted on Friday 6 July 2007

City of York Council is reminding residents that Yearsley Swimming Pool will close on Monday (9 July) to allow a major improvement project to get underway.

The work will take around 16 weeks to complete and has been planned for the summer months to minimise disruption to school and SWIM YORK lesson programmes, clubs and courses.

It will involve replacing the old roof and wall cladding with a new, energy efficient structure to improve insulation of the swimming pool.  The level of insulation will exceed current minimum building regulations for energy efficiency. The ventilation system will also be replaced, creating substantial energy efficiency savings and providing a warmer and more inviting poolside temperature.

Essential work in the plant room will include the installation of new water filters and the changing of the pool chemicals used to disinfect the pool, which will enhance the quality of the water.

Health and safety improvements to the pool hall will include cleaning and re-grouting the swimming pool tank and tiled area around the edge of the pool.  New floor tiles and drainage channels will be laid around the pool and on the walkway in front of cubicles and shower areas, and the fire doors will be updated to meet regulations. The new floor tiling will reduce any slip or trip hazards underfoot.

The lighting will also be improved, with each individual changing cubicle having its own light. The lights will be on sensors, turning on as swimmers enter their cubicle and off as they leave, giving even more efficiency savings.

External works will include improved access, including three disabled parking bays outside the front entrance and a dedicated footpath and cycle path.

Yearsley Swimming Pool Action Group has been consulted throughout and fully supports these proposals.

Alternative facilities at Edmund Wilson Swimming Pool and Waterworld will be open throughout the closure.  During the summer holidays, Edmund Wilson Swimming Pool will revise its swimming programme to include more time for open, family and fun swims. Early morning and lunchtime lane swimming will still be available during the week.
