York's first 'Rural Housing Enabler' has been appointed thanks to a new partnership initiative involving City of York Council, DEFRA, local housing associations and Yorkshire Rural Community Council.
The post holder, Carolyn Vaughan-Downes, will help to identify and raise awareness of local housing needs, as well as providing advice and support to rural communities, landowners and parish councils on affordable housing options. In her new job Carolyn will play a vital role in sustaining many of York's rural communities by helping to maintain a balanced community that supports everyone, including children, young families and older residents. Due to high property prices in the area, many people with connections to villages have been forced to leave in search of a suitable and affordable home. The aim is to help increase the provision and choice of affordable homes for local people in rural communities within the City of York area.
Carolyn is really keen to speak to parish councils, landowners and other
interested parties about the role they can play in helping local people to
access affordable rural housing. To speak to Carolyn, or make arrangements
for her to come out and visit you, she can be contacted by emailing
