Get involved in shaping yor community

Posted on Thursday 5 July 2007

Local residents will get the chance to learn more about two major future developments in York next month.

City of York Council’s Planning team has organised two sessions for people to get an update on the redevelopment of the Nestle South site and the Hungate site.

Residents interested in the Nestle South site - the southern part of the Nestle Rowntree Haxby Road site - will be able to attend a public drop-in session will be held on Thursday 12 July, 3-8pm, at Nestlé reception area on Haxby Road (opposite Yearsley Swimming Pool).

Council officers will be on hand to outline the details of the final Development Brief for the site, which provides specific advice on how the site should be redeveloped, and will be used as guidance in negotiating with developers and progressing any relevant planning applications on the site. There will also be an opportunity to contribute ideas to the forthcoming Masterplanning process, which will look at more detailed planning issues.

Anyone interested in learning more about the history of the Hungate site, next to the River Foss, will be able to visit the archaeological dig being carried out by York Archaeological Trust on Saturday 14 July between 10am-3pm.

Residents will get the opportunity to meet the archaeologists involved in the dig to see what new information has been discovered about the history of the Hungate area, as part of the Hungate (York) Regeneration redevelopment of the site.  Council officers will also be on hand to outline plans for the redevelopment of the site, and to ask people what community facilities are needed in the area.

Outline planning permission was granted in 2005 for a mixed use scheme on the site including offices, housing, shops, a focal community building and a new bridge over the River Foss.  The development will be set within a framework of city squares, riverside piazzas and green spaces.  Community space will form part of the development and the council is looking for stakeholders and residents to put forward their ideas about what this space should be.

York Archaeological Trust will be holding guided tours, workshops and activities at the dig throughout the summer. Anyone wanting more information on the dig or tours should contact 01904 543402 for more information.
