Posted on Friday 5 January 2007
Oaklands Sport Centre, run by City of York Council's sport and active leisure department, is encouraging people to get up and get active, as part of its New Year 'Move it to lose It' campaign.

'Move it to lose it' is a national campaign endorsed by the Fitness Industry Association (FIA), and designed to help participants lose weight by incorporating regular physical activity into their lives.

Paul Bickle, Sports Facility Manager of Oaklands Sports Centre said: "After Christmas many people pledge to get fit and lose weight, but in the short, dark days it can be difficult to muster the energy and motivation. The 'Move it to lose it' campaign has been designed to give people the support they need to get more active, lead a healthier life and ultimately lose weight."

Reducing obesity is a key priority for the Government. According to the World Health Organisation, prevalence of obesity has trebled since the 1980s, and well over half of all adults are either overweight or obese "" almost 24 million people.

The Government's Health Select Committee estimates that the cost of obesity and overweight to the economy stands at £6.6-£7.4 billion per year. Regular physical activity is not only essential to achieve and maintain ideal weight, but it can also reduce the risk of premature death, heart disease, some cancers and type 2 diabetes, as well as improving mental health and sense of wellbeing.

Paul Bickle, said: "Many people know that they need to make efforts to manage their weight and improve their health, but getting more active can be a daunting experience. At Oaklands Sports Centre we are absolutely committed to encouraging the people in the local community to get more active, more often. We believe the 'Move it to lose it' campaign, will provide people with the support, advice and encouragement they need to lose weight, feel healthier and also have fun!"

The 'Move it to lose it' campaign offers two free months gym membership when someone joins for 12 months before the end of February. The 11th and 12th months will be absolutely free "" saving £54.
