York Literature Festival: York writers take centre stage

Posted on Tuesday 27 February 2007

York-based writers feature strongly in the programme for York's first ever Literature Festival, which starts tomorrow (Wednesday, 28 February).

Oz Hardwick (poet), Alison Morgan (playwright) and Miles Salter (writer, journalist and musician) all feature in the Light Night II event taking place on Tuesday 13 March at York's Central Library. This event follows on from the success of the initial Light Night event last October and will feature poetry reading, creative writing taster sessions and poetry appreciation. Admission is free and the event will be open between 6pm and 10pm.

Another York-based writer, Lizzi Linklater, will be running a taster session as Acomb Library for anyone interested in trying their hand at creative writing. This will take place between 2pm and 4pm on Friday 9 March. Admission is £2 and places must be booked in advance by calling (01904) 791135.

On Friday 9 March, from 6pm until 8pm, leading York writers Mike Kenny and John Baker will take part in a 'Double Take' event at York's Central Library.

Mike Kenny is one of the leading playwrights in the UK and has written more than 60 plays, including more than 40 works for children and young people and productions for special needs audiences and actors. He has won numerous awards, including the Writers' Guild Best Children's Theatre accolade for 'Stepping Stones'.

John Baker is one of Britain's most talented contemporary writers and has published eight novels, including a series set in York. The novels are characterised by a self-conscious play on literary and cultural themes, and philosophical ideas, combined with an eye for political and social injustice.

Both writer live and work in York. At the 'Double Take' event they will read from their work and discuss the differing ways that character is developed in the novel and in the theatre. Admission is free of charge and places should be booked in advance by calling (01904) 552815.
